The story below is from one of our Senior Blades members, Mike Jackson, which he shared with some of his friends (one being Chris Jones , our Entertainments Officer) and we thought it was worth sharing with all Senior Blades and will bring back some happy memories for many of you.
I’ve shared with a number of you the Christmas present I received from my son John, namely the print-out of the 1970/71 fixtures and results list in irregular red, white and black configurations together with the woollen scarf with coloured strands matching all the fixtures on the list. The 1970/71 season was one of the best in the Club’s history, when in my opinion, the finest team we’ve ever had , won promotion to the then First Division. The team went on to win their first six matches in that division and were only undone by the wonderful individual goal scored at Old Trafford by George Best, a goal still regarded as one of his very best.
I waylaid Tony Currie at the January Lunch meeting and he had a look at the items after lunch and we had a photo taken displaying the scarf. I told Tony that he had given my son his autograph when John was a lad and Tony said it must be time for another autograph then! He autographed his personal League Career card and my son is going to have the photo and autograph card framed.
I also bought and had autographed, a copy of Danny Hall’s book ‘He’s One of our Own’ about our Manager, Chris Wilder, as Danny was speaking at the lunch that day, so I am now looking forward to enjoying a good read and seeing the Blades make more exciting memories for other generations to re-live
